BERE Ferrers Horticultural Society held its 104th Gardening Club annual show on July 28, when it turned out to be a definite ladies' day as they scooped 24 of the 28 trophies.

The weather conditions in spring and early summer had been diabolical, the worst for decades, and the numbers of entrants and exhibits were down considerably on previous years as a result.

In the decorative section there were special classes representing the jubilee and the Olympics, with Dahlias, Hydrangeas and Budleija providing colourful displays. Certain fruit and vegetables were top class, including blackcurrants, artichokes, rhubarb, onions and shallots but most of the green vegetables had suffered considerably.

Pot plants proved popular and the handicraft section was well supported, with some exquisite work on display.

Entries in the photographic section were also fewer than usual but of a high standard.

There were some new faces among the prize winners which bodes well for the future.

Brian Lamb, chairman of the Bere Apple Fest, on presenting the prizes, congratulated the entrants and the show committee on producing a splendid show under difficult conditions.
