FOR Whitchurch ladies' first ever match they travelled to Ashburton and enjoyed a splendid game in ideal conditions.
Opting to bat first, Whitchurch made a promising start with Jenny Kay, Janet Simmons and Sue Pilkington all making useful contributions.
Lesley Smith and Josie Gerhold had a productive partnership of 82, Lesley striking seven boundaries and Josie gaining in confidence all the time.
Gaynor Pollard came into hit a firm boundary to complete the innings on 129 for 6.
In reply, Ashburton batted sensibly but despite help from some Whitchurch wides were always behind the asking rate.
The Whitchurch ground fielding was good and wicket-keeper Gaynor Pollard let through no byes at all.
The pick of the bowlers were Claire Windermer (2 for 14), bowling flighted off-breaks, and Jessica Jackson (2 for 16), bowling medium pace.
They were well supported by Jenny Kay (1 for 8), Janet Simmons, Josie Gerhold, Jill Northey and skipper Lesley Smith.
From their 28 overs Ashburton reached 103 for 6. Result: a Whitchurch win by 26 runs.
