A LOCAL councillor has voiced concerns over a public safety issue which has arisen on Plymouth Road.
Pedestrian crossings and road markings had been erased due to resurfacing works taking place on the busy road last month, but have yet to be replaced.
‘Of particular concern is that the pedestrian crossing near to the Alexander Centre remains unmarked,’ said West Devon Borough Council Deputy Mayor, Cllr Jeff Moody.
‘For some time now, since the Devon County Council resurfacing of the highway, the road markings have been erased.
‘There are no zigzag lines at the crossing and no zebra crossing markings either. I have witnessed cars parking very close to the crossing and pedestrians are still using the crossing on a daily basis. This is a dangerous combination and I fear for the safety of pedestrians.
‘The crossing is regularly used by people accessing the Alexander Centre, by primary school and Tavistock College pupils going to and from school. It is a recipe for disaster!’
Cllr Moody said he had reported the issue to DCC and hoped the matter would be addressed: ‘I would hate to see someone injured there.’
A Devon County Council spokesperson said: ‘We’ve needed to allow the resurfacing material time to settle and for the weather to be dry enough to repaint the markings.’
The spokesperson added that the zebra crossing and other road linings would be completed as the Times went to press on Tuesday night.
