Newton Abbott Colts 20 Tavy Colts 12 TAVISTOCK travelled with 18 players, encouragingly more than usual, and a victory looked on the cards as the opposition struggled to contain an energetic pack. Newton Abbott took an early lead with a penalty for offside at the ruck but Tavistock soon struck back with a try from flanker Simon Penrose. With this half time lead Tavistock looked to continue in the same vein but were thwarted by the Newton Abbott tactics of running crash ball through midfield and a series of strong driving mauls. Against some lazy defending the lead was snatched shortly after half time when the centre powered through three defenders to touch down under the posts. Tavistock replied with a well worked try by winger Braithewaite with Vanstone converting. Despite good territorial advantage Tavistock could not find a way through and the opposition went further ahead with a try from a ruck in the 22 metre area. The match was decided when Newton Abbott slotted a late penalty putting the game two scores away from Tavistock. Scrum half Ewan Smith, Flanker Penrose and new face Lawrence Millett were the outstanding Tavy players but lack of fitness meant the match was lost in the second half.
