A DRAGON boat racing event due to be held at Roadford Lake this Sunday, (September 30), has been cancelled.

Organisers say that with regret the noisy and colourful spectacle had to be cancelled due to a lack of team entries.

The dragon boat race, country fair and giant car boot sale was to be held to aid Milton Abbot-based children's charity CHICKS which provides respite breaks for underprivileged children in West Devon and city areas.

Tracy Izod of CHICKS said: 'It is very disappointing to have to cancel this popular event at such short notice but the lack of teams and stall bookings due to the change of date have forced us to take this decision.

'If the day had been run without the dragon boat racing the charity would have lost vast amounts of money which obviously no charity can afford to do.'

The group hope to run another event next year, possibly holding 'It's a Knockout' with a hog roast and disco.

CHICKS say they are sorry for any inconvenience this cancellation may have caused, especially to Roadford Lake who have kindly accommodated their events in the past.
