THE continued concerns regarding pedestrians crossing a busy road in Callington were raised at a meeting of Callington Town Council last week.
The council has been advertising for a crossing officer on Launceston Road to help students and the public cross the notoriously dangerous road outside the school but has, as yet, not received any interest.
Cllr Andrew Long said: 'We have advertised for a crossing officer but not had anyone come forward yet which is the problem. There are hundreds of youngsters trying to cross that road at rush hour — it's so dangerous.'
Cllr Jeremy Gist said: 'I used to work as a special constable and did a number of years on the school crossing patrol. It's no surprise that there's no-one wanting to take up the post — you're basically just getting paid danger money.'
It was suggested by Cllr Mark Smith whether he could see if there could be speed checks carried out by the police, but Cllr Gist said that had been done before following a fatal accident when someone was killed crossing the road.
He said: 'I would welcome the opportunity for it to be done again though. What we need is someone from Cornwall Council highways to come and see first hand what it is like.'
Cllr Long said that he had approached Cornwall Council about the issue, as he has done before. He said: 'I have raised the case again for a manned crossing point and a light controlled one on Launceston Road as the current situation is unacceptable.
'I have asked for an urgent meeting on site once the schools are back so we can assess the situation with highways and the police to see where a solution can be found.'
