The club knockout competition finals took place in the Meadows on a lovely sunny afternoon last Saturday. The spectators were entertained by some exciting tennis from some talented finalists, who gave a professional performance of their skills.
This competition was organised by John White and played over several months. In both the ladies and men's singles two junior players pipped their more mature opponents into first place.
Ladies' singles: Sarah Lucas beat Annie Jeffries 6-1, 6-2. Men's singles: Josh Brown beat his father, Linden 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. This was quite a feat for Josh, as Linden has just been picked for the GB tennis squad, in the over 40's category. The matches are to be played in Turkey in October.
Ladies' doubles. Alison Clish-Green and partner Olga Rogers had a nail-biting match to take them to victory over the other finalists, Gaynor Pollard and Jane Colegate, 7-6, 6-4.
Men's doubles. Richard Stafford/ Rod Watson beat Ray Hinton/Paul Newton 6-2, 6-4 in another entertaining match.
Mixed doubles. Phil Harbottle/Jane Colegate beat Gaynor Pollard/Steve Fletcher, in what must have been a tiring afternoon for Gaynor and Jane, who were finalists in two of the afternoon's events.
The chairman, Mike Prout, introduced the president, Norma Woodcock, who presented the cups to the winners.
The afternoon was brought to a successful conclusion with a barbecue prepared and cooked by members and the committee, and timed to coincide with the carnival procession.
