South West Peninsula League Division One East
Appledore 1
Okehampton Argyle 0
FIFTH-placed Appledore knocked the Okes off the top of the table with a hardworking performance at Marshford.
Argyle showed their class in midfield but all their good approach work broke down on the edge of the box and they never seriously threatened the Fishermen's defence.
The match drew a good crowd of over a hundred, kept entertained throughout the match.
Okehampton looked stronger early on and put together some tremendous passing movements down the right with Phil Adams, Chris Wills, Ed Squire and Steve Kinsey interchanging passes and opening up opportunities.
However, the home defence dealt well with the threat and Argyle were unable to get any decent shots on target. Okes' keeper Harry Geering made a great save after ten minutes to keep the scores level.
On 23 minutes, a long ball in from the left by Appledore's Ross Jones was chested down by Roger Bonaparte and fired past Geering to give the home side the lead.
Okehampton tried hard to get back into the game but didn't really trouble home keeper Jimmy Thorne who saved well low down from Will Hawking and watched a 30 yard volley from Alex Wren fizz just past the post.
After the break, Argyle created more pressure and had more of the game.
Five minutes in, Luke Alden beat two players and fired in a 25 yard shot which was well saved by Thorne.
After this, Okehampton worked hard but never troubled the keeper and the game although always on a knife edge wound to its conclusion.
This result sees the Okes drop to second in the table in among several teams who could move above them if they win their games in hand.
Phil Adams had another outstanding game in defence and Steve Kinsey did well up front.
