A COUPLE who were kissing on a bridge in Okehampton had to be rescued after falling into the Okement River in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police say the man and woman were kissing on Lodge Bridge behind Waitrose in Okehampton, when they slipped and fell down the river bank. At 1.52am, police received a report of someone shouting for help under the bridge. Devon Fire and Rescue Service rescued the couple who had been clinging on the side of the rock face, near deep water. Two fire crews from Okehampton attended the scene, as did police officers and an ambulance. They were taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital at Wonford. The man had chest injuries and the woman suffered minor head injuries. A police spokesman said the couple, who have not been named, were also both suffering from the effects of being in cold water.
