A Crapstone man claims his parish council is being 'totally intransigent' over the re-siting of the village telephone box.

Buckland Monachorum Parish Council decided last year to re-position the box to Crapstone Green after it was removed from outside the post office at the request of the owners.

Commander Ken Darby, who lives opposite the green, said he has received 100 responses to a protest flyer he distributed around Crapstone. He said the majority disagreed with the new site for the phone box.

Cdr Darby and 15 other residents from Woodside Terrace attended last week's council meeting in an attempt to re-open negotiations about the proposed site which they claim is dangerous and spoils the open aspect.

'After a rational and cool pitch by ourselves, the chairlady said they were not going to talk about it because it wasn't in the agenda,' said Cdr Darby. 'We felt they were being totally intransigent in refusing to talk about it.

'I am now organising yet another letter and flyer — we still think it's absolutely ridiculous, it's going to be known as the "council's folly",' he said.

Cdr Darby said work by BT has been postponed for a month, during which time he hopes to get a change of heart by the council.

Cllr Peter Brown said the council had gone through the democratic processes and no-one had objected at the time.

He said he thought it was unlikely the council would change its mind.

'We looked all over the place, there were five or six different spots but there was nowhere which wasn't obstructive or on someone's land,' he said.
