Kelly College 1st XV 62

TAVISTOCK went into an early lead in this local derby through a well-struck penalty. However, the Kelly reply was immediate and decisive: three tries in five minutes from wing Mark Bloxham, captain Ollie Pitts and lock Andrew Barwick in addition to two conversions from Mike Myerscough.

At half time the score had risen to 38-6 after two further tries by Pitts and one from prop Thomas Robinson.

To underline the fine spirit in which the game was played, Kelly introduced ten replacements, eight of whom came from the Under 16 XV and with Tavistock reduced to 14 fit players, one of the Kelly star players, Andrew Barwick volunteered to switch sides.

However, the Kelly dominance was maintained, despite spirited tackling from Tavistock and a penalty count, which read 22-3 in Tavistock's favour by the end of the game.

Mark Galliford, Phil Jeffery, James Myerscough and Mark Slee all added tries, with Daniel Green slotting two fine conversions. However, rugby was definitely the winner thanks to a last-minute try for Tavistock by Kelleian Andrew Barwick.

St Boniface College 1st XV 12

KELLY got off to a perfect start against on Saturday with a try from open side flanker Gary Uglow who popped up in support after a fluent three-quarter move broke down ten metres from the try line.

When Paul Barnes drove over two minutes later, Kelly had moved into a 10-0 lead.

But St Boniface struck back after a lightening break from outside half Luke Arscott.

From the ensuing kick off, Andrew Barwick soared high and claimed the ball for Kelly. It was moved swiftly into the centre and from the ruck, was popped back infield to James Myerscough who sprinted to the line with defenders dispatched in his wake.

Mark Galliford then maintained his record of scoring in every game with a fine individual effort before the two Myerscough brothers combined to send James over for his second.

Not to outdone, Mike Myerscough crossed the line a few minutes later. Centre Phil Jeffery completed the scoring as he outflanked the defence seconds before half-time.

Kelly made nine changes at the break, but the tries continued to come thick and fast though prop forward Philip Sanders, wings David Hutchins and Ed Sainter. Jeffery and Uglow claimed their second of the match before St Boniface scored a consolation effort at the death.
