South Devon League Div 4 Newton Town 2 Chagford Reserves 2 ALLOWED a dream start, Chagford should have gone on to win comfortably but were denied by an on form ?keeper and their inability to put away clear chances. After just two minutes Gillam, in the home goal, fluffed his collection of the ball at Potter?s feet and the young forward tucked away the chance at the second attempt. From there, the visitors looked in control but lacked clear penetration. When they did break through, Gillam atoned for his initial mistake and kept them at bay. Frazer Thomas?s well hit penalty (on 25 minutes) pulled Newton level, after Thorn helped Strick to fall over and both sides contested the game more evenly. Early in the second half, Hambly took over at left back with Slatcher coming in to the vacated slot at right midfield. The combo of Hutchison and Hambly worked well, leading to Hambly breaking to the by-line and crossing for Potter to set up O?Connor for Chagford?s second. O?Connor took the chance calmly and the ploy of swapping him and Williams (who was in the former?s midfield berth) had paid off. From thereon, Newton threw everyone forward and were rewarded ten minutes from time as Thomas won the race to the edge of Chagford?s box and poked the ball past Mortimore. On the stroke of full-time, Newton scored from a corner but the referee wiped the goal out for the pushing in a crowded area, leaving Chagford to go home with their first point of the season.
