OKEHAMPTON resident Kay Cunliffe has raised more than £4,000 for Mencap after taking part in a charity bike ride through China.
The physiotherapy assistant has praised all the organisations and businesses and her family and friends for helping her raise such a good total.
To take part in the ride from the outskirts of Beijing to the Great Wall — a total of 300 miles — Kay had to raise a minimum of £2,500 and organised events such as race nights, a crib competition, pub quizzes, coffee mornings and car boot sales, all of which were well supported.
'The bike ride was a wonderful experience and the 101 riders all enjoyed the beautiful scenery,' said Kay, who was visiting China for the first time.
'The weather was extremely hot but we all managed to survive the challenge, thanks to a back-up team who supported us all the way.'
Kay said she now felt much fitter and had made many new friends: 'I feel privileged to have taken part in the fundraising for Mencap,' she said. 'The trip enabled me to appreciate, even more, the many activities Mencap promotes.'
