A MOTHER with multiple sclerosis has decided to embark on an eleven day trek through jungle in Thailand with her son to raise money for charity. Lyn Whitworth from Hatherleigh will be aiming to raise funds for the South West MS Centre in Exeter ? the only such one caring for sufferers and their families in Devon and Cornwall. Lyn and son Darren are due to depart for their charity challenge on November 11. Lyn, who works full time as a practice nurse in Black Torrington, was officially diagnosed with MS last year. She said: ?I decided that life doesn?t have to end once you?ve been ?labelled?. I am going to prove to myself and my patients that you can do things which normally you wouldn?t do.? Lyn said she did not know how the humidity of the region would affect her MS, but was pleased her son would be coming on the trip as well to support her. Darren is currently working for Flybe as an apprentice aircraft engineer at Exeter Airport. The eleven day trip takes place in western Thailand?s Kanchanaburi Province and will involve trekking through rugged jungle near the Burmese border, wading through rivers, kayaking and riding elephants. The trekkers will travel up the valley of the River Kwai, where during the Second World War, the invading Japanese army used Allied POW labour to construct the infamous ?Death Railway? linking Bangkok and Rangoon. The trekkers are unlikely to stumble across rare animals such as tigers and leopards, but can expect to see a myriad colourful bird and butterfly species. The centre in Exeter is part of the National Federation of MS therapy centres and relies on charity giving to continue its vital work. The mother and son team are seeking support for the challenge ? they are looking for official sponsorship and donations, holding monthly fundraising events and a signed football shirts prize draw. Lyn said as most of the money to cover the cost of the trip had already been raised, money donated from now onwards would be going direct to the MS Centre.
