WARD and Chowen, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report a good trade at the recent July fair with an entry of 221 cattle. There were 103 cattle entered in the inaugural sale of pure and crossbred Galloways.
In the store cattle section prices topped at £750 for two 16mo Blonde x heifers from Burnville Farm Partnership, Brentor. Similar aged steers topped at £650 for a group of 15/16mo Limousin x from A Legassick, Whitchurch.
Top price per kilo recorded was 180ppk for a pair of 3/5mo South Devon steers from E J Friend & Son, Lydford, which realised £450.
Young cattle (0–14mo) topped at £625 for a 12mo Charolais x steer from G T J and A R Medland, Tavistock. Similar aged heifers sold to £545 for a bunch of four 12mo Charolais x from the same vendor.
Cows and calves reached £588 for a 9yo Simmental x cow and her 1mo South Devon x heifer calf, P J and M A Hearn, Whitchurch. Breeding bulls topped at £1040 for a 9yo South Devon bull from I G Mortimore and Son, Chagford.
Other notable prices included £730 for a 26mo South Devon heifer from E Dodd, Peter Tavy; £698 for a pair of 26mo South Devon x steers also from E Dodd, Peter Tavy; £572 for two 12mo South Devon steers from
R Murrin, Bere Alston; £565 for 2 11/14mo Charolais and British Shorthorn x steers from Miss C A Uglow, Milton Abbot.
The cattle sale started with mature cattle which topped at £588 for a 11yo South Devon cow from N H and M J Cole, Yelverton.
Stirks sold to £475 for a 9mo Blonde x South Devon steer from C D and D M Alford, South Zeal. Heifers realised £398 for a 7mo Blonde x South Devon from the same vendor.
The next sale of breeding/store cattle is the August Fair on Tuesday, August 3.
