LANDLORD of the Leg O? Mutton in Yelverton, Howard Boulter, has held two events recently to raise money for the Yelverton Village Park. Mr Boulter bought a camper van from California on e-Bay, purely because it was better value for money but had to go to the US to collect it. This resulted in his pub regulars deciding to start a competition guessing the distance in miles each day he would drive as he travelled back across the States. The daily ?guess the miles? was exciting for the park as the competition raised some £110. ?It took me five days of driving, going from San Diego to Florida. In one day I drove 750 miles which is the same as going from Plymouth to John O? Groats in Scotland.? said Mr Boulter Overall, it took him 30 days to get the van back to Yelverton. The fundraising effort was followed up recently by an event to guess the weight of a pumpkin, grown by Kevin and Lucy from Binkham Hill. The pumpkin sat beside the bar at the inn through October until the grand weigh-in on Hallowe?en. The total weight of the pumpkin was 161 pounds, and proceeds from the event were £91. The money was generously donated to help with the costs of maintaining this important local amenity ? the upkeep of Yelverton Village Park costs around £4000 a year. If anyone is interested in making a donation to the village park, contact treasurer Tony Rushbrooke on 01822 854260. Howard is pictured presenting the cheque to Karen Spencer, a member of the village park committee.
