A CLEAR-OUT of a solicitors' store room has led to the Museum of Dartmoor Life receiving a unique donation for their archive.
Staff at Stones Solicitors were clearing out an old store room when they came across eight suede-bound cash journals, covering transactions of the solicitors Burd Pearse from 1891 to 1913.
The firm decided to donate the books to the museum for their archive. Partner in the firm James Browne donated the books personally last Thursday.
Maurie Webber from the Museum of Dartmoor Life said: 'These books are very interesting because they delve into the social history of the town.
'Having had a brief look through them, I have recognised so many names of Okehampton families and it really is fascinating.
'Large amounts of money passed through Burd Pearse, and it will be interesting to have a closer look at the journals and see what sort of transactions went through their office.'
The museum is always on the look out for volunteers, and will be holding a volunteer open day on Wednesday February 29 from 10am to 3pm. Staff will be on hand to explain the work of the museum, and the opportunities available to those wishing to help out.
If you are interested in volunteering, e-mail [email protected]">[email protected] or call 01837 52295.
