THE churches in Bridestowe are organising a joint event to commemorate the start of WW1. Plans are underway for both churches to be used by the village on Monday, August 4. After a short time of prayer at the war memorial, the parish church will be open all day for quiet reflection with candles to light and a display of WW1 memorabilia. The Methodist Church will hold a display of the reports which local historian Howard Barkell has written, on every man whose name is on the stone memorial. It is quite unusual for a village to have a memorial stone with the names of all those who went to war, most only mention those who died. The chapel will be open on Monday, between 11am and 8pm, Tuesday from 6pm to 9pm and Wednesday 10am to noon. Coffee will be served in the Methodist Church with a chance to chat and reminisce. There will be WW1 films on the projector and a computer where visitors can research their own family history during the war. The memorial stone at the chapel will be decorated with flowers and visitors will be able to add their own flower as a personal tribute.
