RESIDENTS on a Tavistock road plagued with vandalism are to join the police in a bid to tackle the problem.

This week three cars were damaged outside the Westbridge Cottages on Plymouth Road early on Saturday morning, part of what Tavistock police Sgt Ian Woods described as a spree of damage. He has pledged a greater police presence.

Gary Langsford, whose car has been damaged on more than half a dozen occasions recently and is now facing a bill for more than £100 to replace a wing mirror that was smashed, said he'd had enough.

'It's been going on for a year or 18 months and always seems to be happening at weekends.

'It did seem to peter off when the police caught somebody, but it's getting to the point again now where the residents are getting sick of it,' said Mr Langsford.

'It just seems Tavistock is getting worse. I've lived here all my life and when we were young we had youth clubs, but it seems kids today aren't interested and it's not just here — my parents up in the Drake Gardens, Crelake area have had problems with the youths too.'

He said there was little option for him and his neighbours other than to park on the street.

'The only other option is to leave cars up Grenville Drive, but there are lots of youths hanging around up there,' he said.

Mr Langsford said the residents would be forming a sort of neighbourhood watch scheme to try and deter the vandals.

'It's a bad job that you have to do that, but that's the society we live in.'
