TAVISTOCK Athletic Club's athlete of the month is John Windemer. John was awarded the trophy in recognition of his determination to return to running and fitness after major surgery.

John was diagnosed with prostate cancer six months ago. At the time, his daughter Rebecca was sitting her A-level exams, working hard to gain the grades which would later secure her a place at London University. Typically, not wishing to upset or distract Rebecca, John kept the diagnosis to himself until exams were finished. He had surgery in the summer, and Rebecca, who also runs with the club, supported her father by competing in the London Triathlon over the Olympic distance, raising more than £400 in aid of prostate cancer research. Six weeks later, John was back at the club and has signed up for a race.

John said: 'I have had lots of support from club members during this difficult time, and I'd like to thank the coaches, especially Lorraine Tofield, for helping me get fit again. I have accepted the trophy, but would like to share it with other club members in similar circumstances.'
