THE Lions Club of Tavistock and the Western Union Jive Club are joining forces to stage a charity Rock 'n' Roll night in Tavistock Town Hall on Saturday November 15 in aid of the Devon Air Ambulance.
Members of the Lions Club became interested in jive after having attended classes in the town hall run by Malcolm White, the chairman of the Jive Club and a former Lions Club member.
Following discussions with Malcolm, the clubs agreed to run a charity event. Lions Club member Steve Grummitt said: 'We have thoroughly enjoyed learning to jive properly, and fortunately it is not quite as acrobatic as you sometimes see on "Strictly Come Dancing" although you never know what moves Malcolm has yet to teach us!
'We are all amazed at the popularity of '50s-style jive and there are events going almost every week in the South West — in fact, Malcolm has organised several jive dances in the town hall and all of them have been sell-outs.'
The charity night starts at 8pm with dancing to DJ Alan's Rock 'n' Roll who is giving his services free of charge. The bar will be open to 11pm and food will be available. Tickets are £7 on the door but due to the event's popularity people wishing to attend are strongly advised to buy them in advance for £5 from the Fireplace and Stove Centre, Vigo Bridge, Tavistock or from Malcolm who can be contacted on 01822 615894.
