TAVISTOCK Squash Club hosted a return leg against Newton Abbot 3 having narrowly lost the first leg by two games to three. Newton Abbot are currently lying second in the league.

Stuart Cox gave Tavistock a flying start by winning comfortably 3-0.

His opponent had no answer to Stuart?s attacking game. The score of 9-0, 9-1, 9-5 tells the whole picture.

Playing at number 4, Colin Grice was involved in a fast moving game which contained many long rallies. Newton Abbot took the first game 9-6 but Colin managed to even the score, taking the second game 9-3.

A lack of concentration by Colin allowed Abbot to take the third game and a commanding lead in the fourth. Pulling back from 3-7 Colin served for the game at

9-8 but eventually lost it 9-10 and therefore the match by one game to three.

Andy Gauler looked unwell during the first game of his match at No 3. Thankfully, he and his game quickly recovered, stemming the flow of his opponent?s deft drop shots and tight wall drives.

Once on top, Andy remained in control and won the match by 3-1.

Steve Tripp at No2 had to pit his wits against another young talent who had an impressive game. Some excellent long rallies containing the full range of drop shots and boasts entertained the balcony.

Despite all his efforts Steve lost the first two games 7-9, 2-9.

Returning to the court with renewed determination he got his just rewards and won the third game 9-5.

The fourth game turned out to be a nail biting and close game, one that Newton Abbot sneaked at the death 10-9.

With the games at 2-2, Tavistock?s Jim Massey went on court in a relaxed frame of mind. His deceptive and powerful shots are a joy to watch. He had his opponent under pressure and stepped up to another gear whenever he wanted. He kept the team waiting for their much valued win until the fifth game.

Tavistock were always confident that Jim would take the fifth as his opponent was quickly tiring. Jim won the match 7-9, 8-10, 9-4, 9-4, 9-4.
