STUDENTS at Okehampton College in Devon have reached the finals of the British Gas Generation Green Energy Performance, a national competition that offers students the chance to win an energy makeover worth up to £150,000 for their school. The Generation Green Energy Performance is a new initiative from British Gas that will see students compete on a specially commissioned dance floor. Each tile in the dance floor is made using innovative Pavegen technology, which harvests the wasted energy from footsteps to generate electricity. Every time someone steps on a Pavegen tile, renewable energy is collected from the footstep. At the event the electricity will be used to power a giant camera to capture images of the performers. Diversity dance stars Jordan and Perri will be judging the competition, with the winning schools chosen for their creativity and the amount of energy they generate. Schools around the country were invited to enter the competition by designing an eco-house using innovative energy solutions such as Pavegen and solar panels. Year 7 student Jessie Warren was chosen as one of two finalists in the national secondary school category, and will now head to London on June 19 to battle it out against pupils from Fulham Cross Girls School for the Energy Makeover prize. Headteacher Daryll Chapman said: 'The students can't wait to meet Jordan and Perri and we have a dance teacher coming in to teach them some moves that will help them create as much electricity as possible. 'It's a really fun way for them to learn about energy, but there's also an amazing prize up for grabs that could make a real difference to everyone at the school.' Ambassadors Perri and Jordan from Diversity said: 'We're really excited to be part of the Generation Green Energy Performance. 'Energy can seem like quite a hard subject, but using new technology like a dance floor that turns your dance moves into electricity makes it easier to understand and much more exciting to learn about.' Abi Robins, director of corporate responsibility programmes at British Gas, said: 'We were particularly impressed by the fantastic level of detail Jessie put into her competition entry. She clearly knows her stuff when it comes to energy and that knowledge shone through.' Last year, British Gas invested more than £1.6 million installing energy saving equipment for schools through Generation Green, helping to save an estimated 400 tons of CO2 and saving the winning schools an estimated £100,000 on energy bills per annum. British Gas Generation Green provides free of charge learning resources and educational experiences, and invests millions of pounds in sustainable energy technologies for schools throughout the UK.
