JENNIE Humphrey, representing Mid Devon Riding Club, and her 8-year-old Danish Warmblood mare, Regina Lyng, travelled to Offchurch Bury, near Leamington Spa, Warwickshire, to compete in the British Riding Club 2006 SEIB National Horse Trials Championships last weekend. There were approximately 74 competitors from around the country competing in the open. The competition followed the long format of initial trot up and vet inspection, followed by the dressage phase on the Friday; roads and tracks, steeplechase, further road and tracks and finishing with the cross country phase on the Saturday. On the Sunday there is a further trot upand vet inspection and culminates with the show jumping with competitors jumping in reverse order. Jennie, who had been drawn as the last competitor to start the cross country phase, was the only one to get around the challenging cross country course clear in the exacting optimum time of 5 minutes 17 seconds and so was the overnight leader going into the show jumping phase. Jennie kept a cool head and completed a perfect clear round over the twisty course, that had caused problems for many other competitors. Jennie finished the competition on her dressage score, the only competitor to do this and so claimed the John Player Trophy as overall individual open champion for 2006. Jennie said: ?Regina Lyng was an absolute superstar; to achieve the time on Saturday we had to take all the direct routes which she jumped boldly and fluently, while on Sunday she remained accurate and obedient for the show jumping phase. ?I would like to express my thanks to Michael van Houben, Andy Reeve and Jai Bratton who have all helped me over the last few years to achieve this success.?
