TAVISTOCK?S carnival week ? organised by the Lions Club ? gets underway on Saturday, July 9 with a feast of music to suit a wide variety of tastes. Jazz returns to Harford Bridge Holiday Park, Peter Tavy, and by popular demand Loveny Male Voice Choir returns to Tavistock for a concert in the parish church. This will be the third time for Jazz at the Bridge and this year it will feature three bands. Original Rags and the Pennyroyal Jazz Band will perform at the venue for the first time ? and they will join old favourite the Martin Dale Quartet. Original Rags, featuring Mike Denham and Steve Graham, is a unique duo, which brings an original and entertaining approach to the jazz scene. This is a much sought after duo featuring classic ragtime, boogie-woogie and jazz classics performed on trumpet, mandolin, piano and occasionally the Swannee whistle along with amusing anecdotes. Drummer Bill Sweet formed the six-piece Pennyroyal Jazz Band some ten years ago and the acclaimed group has become an almost permanent fixture at the renowned Bude Jazz Festival. Returning to Jazz at the Bridge, the Martin Dale Quartet is led by Martin Dale, one of the South West?s most popular saxophonists. The gates to Harford Bridge open at 6pm with Original Rags starting off the music at 6.30pm. The Martin Dale Quartet has two sets ? 7.30pm and 9.15pm, with Pennyroyal Jazz Band on at 8.15pm and 10pm until the close at 10.45pm. Tickets purchased on the night are £10 per head or £4 for students with no charge for the under 10s. Tickets can be bought in advance at £8 from either of the St Luke?s Hospice shops in Tavistock or from organiser Lion member Paul Congo on 01822 614506. The Lions are delighted that this popular event is continuing for the third year ? as in the past, the profits from the evening will go to St Luke?s Hospice in Plymouth and other local charities. Paul Congo said he was extremely grateful for the continued support of Harford Bridge Park Ltd and to the event?s main sponsors, Crebers and Fairway Furniture. There will be a barbecue and licensed bar on site and a draw with all the prizes donated by local business. For those who have a preference for choral music, the Loveny Male Voice Choir will be singing in the parish church at Tavistock. Under the watchful eye of their musical director Rosemary Cole, the choir takes pride in honouring past traditions of Cornish culture while making an original approach in adapting music from all around the world into its varied repertoire. The concert starts at 7.30pm and entrance is £5 per head on the door with free refreshments available during the interval. The Lions are grateful to ?A Rhyme in Tyme? of Brook Street, Tavistock, for sponsoring the event.
