THE Great Western Run will be the challenge this weekend for a RAPID-UK member who is aiming to raise money for the West Devon-based search and rescue charity. Twenty-four-year-old Jason Joslin will be hoping to complete the 13.1 miles in under two hours. Any money he raises will be matched by his employer, BP, for whom he works as a commercial analyst. The Great Western Run takes place this Sunday, starting and finishing in Exeter. James is originally from the Newton Abbot area, but currently works in London. RAPID-UK (Rescue And Preparedness In Disasters) is a publicly funded charity with its head office at Jacobstowe. The charity operates both abroad and in the UK in the search and rescue of casualties following major disasters. RAPID-UK is also involved in the training and development of local disaster management teams in areas of the world vulnerable to large-scale natural disasters. These teams are currently being set up in Columbia, Pakistan and India. Using specialist training, skills and expertise, RAPID-UK volunteer teams have to date attended earthquakes, floods and hurricanes in more than 24 countries around the world ? including last year?s devastating earthquake in Pakistan, where RAPID-UK pulled seven survivors from the rubble of a collapsed apartment building RAPID-UK is supported by 100% donations from the public and all its members are volunteers.
