TWO Explorer scouts are fundraising for the trip of a lifetime after being selected to go to the World Scout Jamboree in West Virginia.

Bryn Bourton, 15, and Jack Reddicliffe, 16, are heading off to the Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve in the summer of 2019.

Bryn, from Bere Alston, and Jack, from Lamerton, are both members of the Explorer Scouts in Tavistock. They both go to different schools — Bryn to Devonport High School for Boys and Jack to Callington Community College—but became firm friends after meeting at Explorers.

A total of 63 scouts have been selected from Devon from 200 who applied and they each have to find £4,100 to fund their trip.

‘There are 45,000 scouts from 15 countries who are going to be there,’ said Bryn’s mum Jo, who runs the cubs in Bere Alston. ‘What the scouts pay is based on the GDP of the country, so rich countries supplement the poorer ones.’

She said fundraising was ongoing, with the boys having plenty of ideas up their sleeves.

’They raised £420 with a Big Bag Pack at Tesco in Tavistock at Christmas and they had help from some of the other Explorers, which was nice, because even though they are not going themselves they are still helping them.

‘It is a big commitment for them, because they are both doing their GCSEs this year,’ she added. ‘We are very proud of them for being selected.’
