A Meavy School pupil became the first person to cross the line in Cancer Research UK's Race for Life in Plymouth last weekend.

Jack Davey, 10, was taking part in the 5km event along with staff, parents and pupils from Meavy Primary at the cancer charity's annual event.

The group of 15 were inspired to take part after the loss of former classmate 10-year-old Daniel Bruce in February, following a battle with leukaemia.

Jack took part in the race as a Meavy Maid and crossed the line in first position in a time of 24 minutes, despite not having completed a race of this size before.

Mother Jo Davey said: 'He was so pleased!'

The group has so far raised over £400 in sponsorship for the charity, with more donations still coming in.
