A CHRISTMAS Eve service with a difference is being planned in Whitchurch this year, when a video production of the nativity featuring local children goes on show.
The idea is the brainchild of Whitchurch curate the Rev Andrew Williams, who is director of the film involving some 30 children from the Sunday club, pre-school group and primary school.
Mr Williams said: 'We made Nativity — the Movie last year and it was so successful we are doing Nativity — the Movie II this year.
'We've got some superb scenes lined up. We are going to try and re-create Roman-occupied Bethlehem of the first century and there is an adventurous scheme to keep the angels airborne — which is all gong to be something of a challenge!'
This year, to cater for the extraordinary demand to see the film, two showings are being planned.
'Last year, when we showed it with three big screens in the church on Christmas Eve, we had to turn away more than 50 people,' said Mr Williams.
Filming for the new movie is set to take place at a secret location this weekend — but Saturday shoppers may catch a glimpse of the action in Woolworth and the Bedford Hotel, when some of the cast will be filmed asking the way to Bethlehem.
Many of the children are playing more than one role in the traditional Christmas story — the youngest cast member is just three months old, and plays the baby Jesus.
Cameraman for the movie is Brian Eales, of BJ Video, who uses camera gear rented specifically for the occasion.
Mr Williams said: 'We take it to a company in Exeter and get it professionally edited — the finished product is very good.
'Last year it was fantastic, really good and the atmosphere in the church during the evening was amazing.'
Nativity — the Movie II can be seen at St Andrew's Church, Whitchurch at 4.30pm and 6.15pm on Christmas Eve.
