Visitors to The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum in May will be able to enjoy the culmination of an extensive period of restoration within this beautiful garden. Head gardener,Matt Bishop and his team are working hard to complete a major replanting programme using many thousands of plants. The first sign of refurbishment visitors will notice are some of the borders along The Long Walk. As far as possible, the planting here remains true to that of 'new naturalism,' a style largely inspired by the way plants grow in nature, with concentrations and outliers rather than distinct groups. A major feature at the Quarry Garden is the wonderful Thyme Bank which, by mid-May, will see a further 2,800 new plants positioned to carpet the bank with a kaleidoscope of summer colour. And the restoration of the Sunken Garden on the lower terrace of Lionel Fortescue's famous Walled Garden has been a major task over the winter, and there is now a sense of excitement and anticipation that Matt's vision for the lower terrace will be fully realised. The Garden House, including tearooms and plant sales centre, is open daily from 10.30am to 5pm. For further information tel 01822 854769.
