Wellington 1st XV 27 Okehampton 1st XV 0 DISAPPINTMENT was the order of the day after Okehampton were comfortably beaten in their first league outing after promotion last season. Both sides were below full strength, Oke fielding a particularly young side due to unavailability and injury. Playing down the slight slope the Okes matched their opponents for the first quarter. Then basic errors began to creep into their play and that would be the story for the whole afternoon. Okehampton missed five kickable penalties during the match, using three different kickers. Wellington?s first score came from a quick tap penalty after Okehampton had failed to find touch. Their second came after a dubious penalty award was kicked for the corner. Wellington caught and drove from the lineout, a tactic that Oke continually had trouble defending against. This resulted in another unconverted score to leave the Okes trailing 10-0 at the interval. The match was still there to be won as most of Wellington?s attacking play had resulted from Okehampton errors. This again was the case, when from an attacking Okehampton scrum the ball was turned over and moved through several pairs of hands in a length of the pitch move that resulted in the full back crossing in the right corner. Although unconverted, this score really sealed the game for the home side. Oke failed to win much decent quick ball and failed to really test the home defence although winger Tom Powell was unfortunate to have a try disallowed for the second consecutive week. Wellington scored two more tries; one converted to complete the scoring . Oke threw on all their substitutes but still failed to really stretch the home side. There were some positives to be taken from this defeat. Young full back Gary Sizmur, playing out of position showed some nice touches. Also the lineout, although far from perfect, was an improvement on last week. Okehampton have to regroup, and with unavailable players to return, will hope to get their first try, and first win at home to Perranporth in another cup tie this week.
