PGSOB 1

Tavistock 2

TAVISTOCK men's hockey team clinched a position in the play-offs with a good all-round performance and a return to the form of old.

Having had a lacklustre game the previous week, the entire team stepped up the tempo against a good quality PG's side with an attacking flair.

Tavistock took the game to the opposition from the whistle and penetrated the opposing defence with Jefferys and Edwards looking dangerous.

The game's relentless pace continued unabated with Tavistock's networking style weaving its way up the pitch and creating many scoring chances.

The half-time whistle came with a surprising 0-0 scoreline but the warmth of the changing rooms was gratefully received.

At the restart Tavistock continued the pressure and maintained the work-rate — and with rolling subs the pace was continual.

With a welcome return to form by captain Aveyard a new variation was brought into the short corner routine and a well struck shot by Roger Costello opened the scoring.

The lead was unfortunately short-lived when a weak clearance from defence set up a free shot on goal where the equaliser was struck home.

Tavistock took this in their stride and, confident in the ability to score, tore back into the home side's territory.

Three shots were initially saved but Nick Andrews stole the ball from the keeper and casually slotted it into the back of the net.

The justifiable result was a major boost for Tavistock who have managed to get themselves into the play-offs for South Division 2 for the first time in the club's history.

The all-round performance was a pleasure and the style of play Tavistock have developed over the last three seasons should hold them in good stead for the future whether that is in South 2 or South West 1.
