REFERENCE the recent article which appeared in the Times edition, September 18, relating to the current town crier, David Turner and his consort Rosemary Turner. I must admit that I have a great deal of admiration for Mr and Mrs Turner. However, I read that Cllr Philip Sanders said: 'I would like to say that the current town crier and consort are the best that I have known and are dedicated to their role.' I was very surprised to read these comments! When my late husband, Bob Rose, and I were Tavistock Town Crier and consort to the then mayor, Cllr Jenny Metcalf, we felt very privileged to represent our town and local people, attending several events in the community; a role which we pursued with integrity and dedication. I felt that credit must also be given to former town criers, Dick Lloyd and Ron Davy, who served our town and local people with equal dedication for several years. Although deceased, many local people will remember them and the important role they served in the community. I hasten to add that the role of the town crier and consort are voluntary ones, and it was an honour to fulfil our role. Shirley Rose Whitchurch
