THE conclusions listed after the public meeting of April 28, which was intended to get the public?s input to follow up the accolade of Best Market Town, were all within the control of the town council with the exception of the last item.
This item brought together the several suggestions to improve Tavistock?s traffic and parking problems, covering present and future car park needs and park and ride schemes - action on these items is not in town council control.
The attempts made to remove the atrocious ?Gateway? show how local views can be ignored.
One of the items suggested was a park and ride scheme to relieve the problems in the town, particularly over the summer season.
David Inman, West Devon?s Director of Community Services, recently dismissed this idea as ?Unlikely to work in Tavistock?. One wonders what studies and work has been done before dismissing this idea.
A comprehensive professional study of Tavistock?s traffic problems is now vital and the town council should initiate some action.
It needs to be done with the involvement of the county engineers, preferably excluding the people who thought up the Gateway, as they have the responsibility for implementation of proposals and the county council controls the purse strings.
