NOMINATION packs are now available for potential councillors in Okehampton after more than ten electors in the town requested a by-election.
The vacant seat on the town council arose after the resignation of Tony Gregory last month.
A notice of election will be published on January 11, 2001.
Tony Rose, elections officer at West Devon Borough Council, said nomination papers have to be returned between January 11 and noon on January 19 — provided two or more candidates submit nominations a by-election will be held on Thursday, February 15, 2001.
If no candidates come forward the town council will co-opt a new member.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a councillor and would like to know more should contact John Winchester, Okehampton town clerk, on 01837 53179.
Nomination packs are available from the Returning Officer, West Devon Borough Council, Kilworthy Park, Tavistock, PL19 0BZ.
And a by-election could be on the cards in the parish of Okehampton Hamlets following the resignation of long-standing councillor John Hodge.
Notice of the vacancy will be posted at Mole Avon, Meldon Hall, Middle Southcott and in the Arcade in Okehampton.
Alan Gammon, clerk to the council, said Mr Hodge had served on the council for many years and wished him luck for the future.
He said: 'His experience in dealing with agricultural and political issues at local and national level, and his farming family connections going back many generations, brought a wisdom and common sense that will be greatly missed by this council.'
A by-election will be held if ten electors make a request in writing to the chief executive at West Devon Borough Council, Kilworthy Park, Drake Road, Tavistock, PL19 0BZ.
