THE weather may have been more like winter at the start of Winkleigh Fair Week but at the end of the seven days the sun was shining setting the scene for the final extravaganza.

Despite the cold and rain, which meant a street party had to be re-located indoors, organisers have reported one of the best supported fair weeks of recent times with a large programme of events attracting many locals and visitors.

The week's events providing fun and entertainment for all the community culminated in a day of activities on Saturday starting with a children's painting competition in the morning and ending at midnight with live music in the Square from Exeter band Tight-Squeeze.

The fair dates back to 1262 and true to tradition children took flowers and eggs to the church to be distributed to the elderly of the parish on the opening day.

This was followed by the crowning of the Queen of the Fair, Sophie Popham, and the presentation of millennium mugs to all children of Winkleigh aged 16 and under.

Other highlights were a hugely popular talent show with 25 local acts, a family dog show, swimming gala, fancy dress and strong man competitions and round the village race.

Treasurer of the fair committee Julie Mitchell said it was a wonderful week and the whole community really enjoyed it.
