IT seems the mystery over the exact identity of a bright orange object seen moving slowly in the sky over Whitchurch Down last month could take a while to uncover.

After a strange glowing object was seen near The Pimple during the evening of Thursday, February 26 by a local family, many other residents have come forward to the Times to say they had also seen the mysterious object.

Two articles have appeared in the Times on March 5 and March 12 and on both occasions, readers have been in contact with their own accounts of what they saw.

Since the article on March 12, two people think they may have unearthed the identity of the object.

Mavis Kingham from Tavistock said she had seen around ten of the orange objects in the sky at the same time.

She said: 'I thought it look like something out of this world! It was only when my son came home that evening that he explained that Kelly College was having a lantern festival. That must have been what everyone else saw.'

Other residents' accounts differ, in that they saw only one bright light on that night and believed it to be bigger than a lantern.

Kevin Downes also believes he may have discovered the object's identity.

He said: 'When walking my dog Molly beyond Pew Tor, Molly came across the remains of what appeared to be a very large weather balloon. The remains were orange/yellow in colour and were situated on open land roughly mid-way between Vixen Tor and Pew Tor. Mystery solved?!'
