LAST Saturday week Sainsbury?s enclosed their Christmas catalogue with the usual colour supplements found in weekend papers - and very impresive it was too, featuring a wide range of products to suit every pocket. However, this does not bode well for the shops in Tavistock should they open a large, out of town store. If every new home being built around Tavistock has at least one car, then parking in the town will become almost impossible and this, coupled with the lack of car parks and exorbitant parking charges, will drive people out of Tavistock. Councillor Jenkins produced an array of gobbledygook in this paper in October 4, telling us how the charges were going up 7.2% and then down 7.2% and how generous the council was being to Chagord, where charges were reduced by 39%. Frankly, people in Tavistock don?t really care about Chagford, but they do care about their town, so how about a bit of generosity for them, like spending some money on a new car park? Cllr Jenkins also states that cost of maintaining and managing car parks had increased. Perhaps he would like to enlighten us as to exactly how much was spent against how much income was received in Tavistock and, at the same time, let us know why one can park for half an hour at Waitrose in Okehampton but one has to pay for a full hour at Somefield. Or is Tavistock just the milch cow for the rest of West Devon? Paul Mercer Ivy Cottage Peter Tavy
