A TAVISTOCK PE teacher received the surprise of his life when he opened his post recently, to find an invitation to meet Prime Minister Tony Blair at Downing Street.

Huw Morgan, who teaches at Tavistock College, first thought the letter was a hoax.

'Apparently someone had nominated me to go, but to this day I don't know who it was,' said Huw, who was among 200 teachers invited to meet the prime minister, his wife and other senior ministers including David Blunkett and Estelle Morris last Monday.

'It was exciting, a great experience,' said Huw.

'We were there probably around two-and-a-half hours while they were circulating around.'

He said Mr Blair asked him where he taught and what he thought were the biggest problems facing staff at the college.

'He seemed very down to earth, very easy to talk to. There was no awkwardness at all. They were all very nice really,' said Huw.

He said it was great to have actually walked through the famous doors of 10 Downing Street and see what lay behind the windows.

John Simes, Tavistock College principal, said: 'We were delighted to hear of Huw's invitation to Downing Street in recognition to his contribution to education.

'I welcome the initiative by the Government to recognise the value of our profession,' he said.

'Huw is an inspirational teacher and he is representative of all my colleagues here on the staff at Tavistock College.'
