A FAMOUS disabled mountaineer will be giving a motivational speech at Callington Community College later this month, in aid of the Cornish charity ShelterBox.

Dr Norman Croucher OBE, who has climbed some of the world's highest peaks despite losing both his legs below the knee following a railway accident as a teenager, wanted to help the charity following the terrible destruction and loss of life in the Japanese tsunami earlier in the year.

Alongside such people as the world motor racing champion Jackie Stewart, radio and TV personality Jimmy Saville and athletics champion Brendan Foster, Dr Croucher has twice been chosen as 'Man of the Year.'

He was the subject of a 'This Is Your Life' programme and received an OBE for his voluntary work for disabled people. He was also the first disabled person to be appointed to the Sports Council.

Dr Croucher will be appearing in Callington on September 29 at 7.30pm. Tickets, priced at £5 each, will be available from Pridhams electrical store in Callington.
