THE function room at the Ordulph Arms was packed for the first Taste and See dinner of the autumn season. The speaker was author and speaker Wendy Bray, who writes in regional newspapers and has had seven books published, one of which, ?In the Palm of God?s Hand? won the Christian biography of the year award in 2002. Wendy used extracts from this book to illustrate her talk, entitled, ?Whose life is it anyway? A different kind of cancer story?. Wendy was diagnosed with an aggressive form of Hodgkins Lymphoma in 1999 and underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. In 2005 illness struck her again when she underwent surgery for breast cancer. She has always written a journal and during the weeks of isolation treatment some of her most poignant entries were made. She talked about how her faith was tested but it also deepened her understanding of it. She described her anger and frustration at the same time as well as trying to continue as a wife and mother to her two children and how the whole experience of being a cancer survivor has changed her outlook on life, to value relationships above everything else. Ruth Newman, chairman, thanked Wendy for a ?truly inspirational and thought provoking talk?. The next dinner will be on Tuesday December 4 when Jo Wright, a singer/songwriter and teacher will be talking and performing some of her compositions. For further information contact Ruth Newman on 01822 616859 or Linda Medland on 01822 615940. Taste and See is run by a committee representing churches in the Tavistock area and is open to all women of any age.
