AN inspiring sculpture in memory of former principal Chris Powell has been unveiled at Okehampton College. The sculpture features a life-size figure of a rugby playing student straining to reach a rugby ball, to reflect Mr Powell?s passion for the sport. The sculpture was designed by art teacher Jean Bucannon and made out of clay and cast in bronze resin by local sculptor Alan Biggs. The word ?achievement? is written across the player?s body and the names of staff and students involved in the creation of the memorial have also been incorporated into the design. College principal Daryll Chapman said: ?The word achievement was something that Chris brought into the school. We felt very strongly after Chris died that we wanted to have a long-lasting memorial to him.? The sculpture which is situated in the college?s peace garden was unveiled by Mr Powell?s sons Tom and Andrew, who were presented with miniature models of the design. Mr Powell was principal of Okehampton College from 2000 to October last year, when he collapsed and died suddenly.
