TAVISTOCK College will be positively fizzing with innovation today (Thursday), as the school holds its 'product of the year' competition.

The event made its debut in the school calendar last year — an occasion which principal Helen Salmon described as 'fabulous'.

Around 70 students are taking part in the event, entering inventions or creations from a variety of DT subjects, including robotics, metal work, woodwork, cookery, and fashion.

The products are entered by students from across the age range, although the majority are part of exam projects.

The school hall is taken over for the day with all the students showing off their products. Students and invited guests are able to visit each 'stand' and vote for whichever product is their favourite in each category, and finally an overall winner is announced.

Mrs Salmon said: 'It was so successful we decided we had to run it again.

'Some of the products they made last year were amazing, someone designed the most inventive money box and some of the fashion entries were phenomenal — when I can't sew to save my life!

'The event really gives recognition to students for their creativity, rather than just academic skills, which shows they can excel at making something.

'There is a real buzz in the hall on the day and the staff love it as well.'
