A NEW information leaflet aimed specially at West Devon's dog owners during the present foot and mouth restrictions has been published by the borough council.

Called Walking your Dog, it gives the most up-to-date information on areas where you can walk your pet, and how to be a responsible pet owner.

Due to the restrictions, dogs and their owners are not allowed to use moorland, public access land, public footpaths and bridleways to combat the spread of disease.

But it means the borough's environmental health officers are battling to keep towns and villages clear of dog faeces — collections from dog bins have tripled in the last few weeks.

Dave Arscott, environmental health officer, said dog owners will face a heavy fine if they are caught not disposing of dog faeces responsibly.

He said: 'The majority of dog owners are being extremely good. It's just a minority who spoil it for others. We must protect public health and we are stepping up our checks to maintain that protection.'

The new information leaflets are being posted across West Devon.
