THE Milton Ford ward of West Devon Borough Council has fallen vacant with the resignation of Independent Michael Pithouse.

The ward, which covers the Chillaton, Lewdown and Milton Abbot areas, was won by Mr Pithouse in a significant by-election almost five years ago — he overcame a concerted Liberal Democrat campaign and denied the party an overall majority on the 30-strong council.

He safely secured re-election in the seat at last May's round of council elections when he was challenged by a Labour candidate.

Borough chief executive David Incoll said Mr Pithouse had worked hard for his constituency and he was sad to hear of his resignation.

Mr Pithouse has also served on Tavistock Town Council but resigned from it in 1998 over the way it handled its financial affairs.

He sought election in a town council by-election earlier this month under the banner of 'Affordable Council Tax' candidate but came bottom of the poll in a four-way fight against candidates from the three main political parties.

The Milton Ford vacancy means the borough council now comprises 12 Independents, 9 Conservatives and 8 Liberal Democrats.

Most of the Independents formed themselves into a 'group' in order to be allocated seats as a block on council committees. Mr Pithouse was not among their number.

His departure leaves Cllr Ted Sherrell as the sole 'non-aligned' member on the council.

Notice of the forthcoming by-election was published last Friday — prospective candidates have until Monday April 3 to submit nomination papers.

Provided sufficient candidates come forward, an election will be held on Thursday May 4.

Nomination packs are available from the returning officer at the borough council offices in Tavistock.
