CARY Brock from Hatherleigh is an area finalist in Prosper's 1999 Training Achiever of the Year award.

Despite leaving school with no academic qualifications because of dyslexia Cary, 19, showed determination which convinced Training South West, Exeter College's training arm to accept him as a Modern Apprentice in vehicle body repair — and now nominate him for the award.

Employed by his father, Richard Brock of Exbourne Garage, Exbourne, he gained NVQ Level 3 in vehicle body repair and is working towards Level 3 in refinishing. The winner will be announced at St Mellion Golf and Country Club on March 30.

The competition is organised by Prosper — the skills development company — and attracted more than 80 nominations from training providers.

When not working Cary plays squash and also plays the cornet in Hatherleigh Silver Band.
