WORK on a £1.4 million scheme to improve the A30 near Okehampton got under way on Monday.

The works, on a two-mile stretch of carriageway between Woodleigh and Merrymeet, involves reconstruction of part of the road, resurfacing of the whole section, replacement of safety fencing and the installation of a new concrete drainage channel.

The scheme is intended to cut down traffic noise and provide a safer road surface, while the new drainage channels should also improve safety and maintenance.

Andy Hohl, Highways Agency project sponsor, said: ?The replacement of the worn road surface with a new, low noise material will bring real benefits for people living nearby, as well as improving skid resistance and safety for motorists along one of the main routes through Devon and Cornwall.?

During the project, which is due to be completed by July 2, contraflows will operate in both directions plus intermittent lane and slip road closures, which may lead to some traffic congestion. A 50mph speed restriction will also be in place, enforced by cameras.

Mr Hohl said: ?We would ask drivers to observe the speed limit during the works, which are there to protect the workforce and for the safety of motorists themselves.?

There will be some night closures, the first of which was on Monday between 7pm and 7am. During these closures, traffic is being diverted through Cheriton Bishop and Crockenwell.

The work, most of which will be done between 7am and 7pm, is being carried out by Lafarge Aggregates Ltd.
