A NUMBER of safety improvements are being looked into by Devon County Council’s highways team for the Brook Lane Roundabout in Tavistock.

The road layout at the Brook Lane Roundabout the A386 has been a cause for concern for local residents, police and councillors for many years.

In June last year, a proactive police operation was held in a bid to address persistent road issues at the location, including drivers not paying attention to the road layout and the rules of a roundabout.

Police from Tavistock said there had been a ‘number of near-misses’ at the site due to people either driving over the roundabout or on the wrong side.

Police met with Highways to discuss their findings.

When approached by the Times, a spokesman from Devon County Council announced that options were being considered: ‘The county council’s highways team has reviewed the site, and while the mini-roundabout layout is safer than the former T-junction, it is recognised that on occasion driver discipline could be improved when approaching from the supermarket direction. A number of options have been considered and the matter is being discussed with the local county councillor.’

Devon County Councillor for Tavistock Debo Sellis said: ‘I used £2,000 of my locality budget for this area to be assessed by senior Highway officers.

‘I share residents’ concerns and have listened to them. We await the professionally assessed direction.’

The police operation was organised by officers with the backing of councillors and Highways. Tavistock police worked alongside special constables.

At the time, Tavistock Sgt Chris Dixon, who organised the event, said: ‘When people are travelling towards Tavistock they are travelling in a straight line across the roundabout but when people are coming out of Brook Lane with no view it is a recipe for disaster.’
