A MEETING called to discuss traffic problems and possible solutions in Bere Alston ended with residents failing to reach agreement.
Following previous village meetings when Mike Parnell of the Devon Highways Authority and county councillor Greta Madigan were present, a questionnaire was sent to all households about the traffic problems in the village, asking for prioritisation of the main concerns.
The results having been collated by the county council, a meeting was held in the parish hall last Wednesday to discuss the results and the way forward.
Alan Carter, chairman of Bere Alston Tenants and Residents' Association — who chaired the meeting — said it had been 'a bit of a waste of time', but they had 'achieved something'.
'There were over 50 people there, but the only trouble was they couldn't agree about anything!' he said.
However, the school crossing patrol was going ahead, together with improvements to drainage in Broad Park Road.
The traffic warden was now coming more regularly and there had been an increase in the use of speed guns in the village to try to reduce car speed.
It is also hoped to start a virtual bus to the primary school.
'We'll let it lie for a while and then start again,' Mr Carter said.
Sgt Ian Woods from Tavistock Police Station gave a talk and Mike Parnell of Devon County Council was again present. Mr Parnell said the council had not wanted to pursue things the community did not want.
'Our aim was to feed back the results of the questionnaire and confirm what residents wanted us to do next, but it didn't work out like that,' he said.
'All we can do is continue what we have started from the matters that came out of the previous meeting and continue to look at matters as they arise.'
Other work being planned includes resurfacing part of Fore Street, putting in dropped-crossings to enable people to get on and off the footpath at various places.
It also includes alterations to footpaths, barrier and waiting restrictions at the school to enable the crossing patrol to start in September.
