I WAS not surprised to read about the cycle route alongside the proposed rail route being shelved. Having done a layman's survey for Sustrans around 2000 when I started as a volunteer ranger, what struck me then was what a waste of a recreational route it was for walking/cycling. An overgrown track bed where walkers had made some sort of pathway. When I got to the Shillamill viaduct, shock and horror, I was confronted by great steel gates (I would suspect they are still in place?) Getting down from the viaduct back up on the track near the road bridge I then came face to face with a tunnel. I had lived in Tavistock then for some 18 years and never knew it existed. I know that my report back to Sustrans at that time said 'get the authorities in gear' and proceed to make this part of the National cycle network. Sadly it never bore fruit. It would now appear to be lost forever. I note that an alternative route is being pursued. It seems to me the obvious choice would be down the canal until its tunnel, then up to Lumburn, Buctor onto Gulworthy. In recent times attending the Peninsula Rail Group meeting (Okehampton to Bere Alston) I expressed my concerns of the cycle route from Meldon to Lydford as this route is actually on the track bed. The answer I got was that this route would run alongside the rail line. It would appear that it would be feasible on one part of the track but not another. Both sections of route have viaducts but only Tavistock to Bere Alston has a tunnel. I do see the problem there. Finally I just hope the authorities can give everyone what is needed. A rail line from Okehampton to Bere Alston. and further extensions of off road cycle routes for the same destinations. I live in hope, I have a dream. R E Pinch Sustrans Volunteer Ranger Tavistock
